Ah, romance is in the air! As February 14th is coming up, you may be scrambling to make dinner reservations or trying to remember exactly which flowers she said were her favourite. But a romantic date doesn’t have to be small meal portions at a fancy restaurant – it just has to suit your relationship!
With these unique options for a date night in Edmonton, you can try something new and make it a Valentine’s Day to remember.
Let go of the pressure and think about what you and your partner are into, then find a date idea to match.
My partner and I would like to…
1. Express Ourselves
Chinook Series is an international curated performance festival. But the performance art is not exclusive to the acclaimed artists- they also run collaborative workshops which you can be a part of! Workshops like “You Move Me” that focuses on flowing, improvised movement, or “Senses in Motion” about sensory discovery could be great choices for February 14th. There are also more options over the weekend, as well as plenty of performances if you’d rather just watch.
2. Be Outside
Your date can (literally) be a breath of fresh air at Hawrelak Park. The location is nice in any case, but the current addition of the Ice Castles makes it all the more magical. The Silver Skate Festival is also taking place here, so you can cheer on skate racers, be amazed by the Fire Sculpture, and maybe even catch a live music performance, all under the wide open sky.
3. Learn Something New
The latest exhibition at Telus World of Science is called POPnology and if you and your partner are self-proclaimed nerds, this is the date idea for you! At this interactive exhibition, you’ll see the DeLorean Time Machine from “Back to the Future” and HAL 9000 among an abundance of other displays that connect technology to pop culture icons. Go ahead, geek out!
4. Make Ourselves a Meal
Pfft, dinner reservations are not for you two – you’d rather do it yourself! Cook Like a Master Chef is a cooking class lead by Doreen Prei and Kathryn Joel being held on February 17th. From lunch to a 3-course evening meal, with wine pairings throughout, you’ll gain the skills needed to prepare your own chef-like meals at home.
They’re also hosting Dinner with Your Valentine on the 16th, but although you’re invited to observe the cooking, this is a six-course sit-down meal and not a class. Note that spaces for registration are limited, so act fast!
5. Laugh Out Loud
Plain Jane Theatre Company encourages you to “embrace your crazy heart” with their hilarious musical comedy “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” . Running from February 15-24, 2018, you and your lovably crazy mate will crack up at the story of a tumultuous 48 hours of love, confusion, and passion.
6. Play With Pets
As pet lovers, A Furry Valentine’s Celebration is likely to be your dream come true. The Edmonton Humane Society invites you to spend Valentine’s Day with fluffy friends on Saturday, February 17th from 7 to 9 PM. More details to come soon, but it is an adult-only event and there are puppies – what more do you need to know!?
7. Get Crafty
Imagine mornings with your hunny, sipping from hand-designed mugs you made yourselves! Crankpots Ceramic Studio is giving you the opportunity on February 17th, 2018, to make it happen. You’ll receive all the supplies you need, as well as instructions, and a glass of wine each at this crafty session.
8. Or Artsy
Another idea for both artsy and not-so-artsy types alike; signing up for a Paint Nite for Valentine’s day is a great way to practice your painting while enjoying each other’s company. Maybe you’ll even gift your final paintings to one another!
9. Have a Little Friendly Competition
Who says hurtling an axe at a slab of wood isn’t romantic!? Jack Axe thinks an evening spent at their venue is a date night done right. On February 14th, they’re hosting the Kiss my Axe event. Music and drinks on special will make for a high-energy evening – so come by, if you’ve got the chops!
10. Stretch Out and Relax
Maybe your daily lives have been a little hectic lately, so spending some quality time together in a relaxing setting is just what you need. The Valentine’s Candlelit Partner Yoga Workshop on February 16th is calling your name. You’ll practice trust-building and gentle supportive partner poses and receive champagne and chocolate covered strawberries while you’re there. When it’s time to leave, you might think “Namaste here”.
11. Test Our Mental Skills
Up for a challenge? See if you have what it takes to race against the clock and break free from a themed room of riddles and problem-solving. There are plenty of Escape Rooms in Edmonton so find one near you and work together as a team to come out victorious!
12. Shoot for the Stars
While laying in a field in the dead of winter in Edmonton to spot constellations might not sound very appealing, you can still spend your Valentine’s Day stargazing! The U of A allows for visitors to drop by and explore the magnificence of the night sky in their Department of Physics Astronomical Observatory – talk about an out-of-this-world date!
13. Escape the Ordinary
To “escape the ordinary” is the goal of Adults Only Nights at the Muttart Conservatory. Every Wednesday night, you’re able to appreciate the pyramids after dark and they even offer tours and wine! Other aspects of the events may vary depending on when you attend, but you can be sure it’ll be like nothing you’ve experienced before.
14. See Where the Night Takes Us
Finally, if you both prefer to “wing it,” there’s nothing wrong with setting out on an unexpected adventure in downtown Edmonton – there’s always something going on! If you want just a little direction, though, a super helpful site is YEG Date Night. The site has an events calendar, date night inspiration, suggestions for inexpensive places to eat, and more.
Make this Valentine’s Day your own by planning a date that’s a little less conventional. After all, the best dates are ones spent doing something you really love, with the one you love.
